CONSERVATION MANAGER’S NOTES

I have proposed a final phase of restoration work at Bankhead Moss that would involve additional tree felling on the southern side of the peat dome, blocking the remaining drainage ditches and the creation of shallow scrapes on areas of degraded peat to encourage the spread of bog vegetation including the peat forming Sphagnum mosses. The work would be carried out over 3 years and for anyone interested in the proposals, I am planning an evening meeting at Bankhead Moss on the 29th of June (details in the events section).

Volunteers have cleared hawthorn scrub at Fleecefaulds, birch at Bankhead and cotoneaster at Carlingnose Point, thank you and well done to all those that have helped out. We have also added more tyres filled with gravel to the WW1 pier at Carlingnose Point with the hope of attracting terns to these odd but popular ‘nesting boxes’.

Some excellent work has been carried out on the weekend workdays, but numbers have often been low so I am afraid that from the June date onwards, booking will be essential and I will need 8 people booked on for a task to go ahead. Call me on 07739 428204 for details of tasks and to book.

Finally, the building at the Jupiter Centre in Grangemouth has been closed and I am now working between Cramond House and home. The mobile phone number and email address will remain the same but I will give updated contact details in the next issue of FAWN.
