WORLD DAY OF PRAYER TREE PLANTING.
It all started at a hobbies fair in St. Andrews several years ago – some ladies from St. Leonard’s Church noticed that SWT ran a tree-planting scheme. This fitted perfectly with the World Day of Prayer, which that year was asking all participating Churches to plant trees.
So for two years the Churches gave a donation to SWT and had trees planted at Fleecefaulds and West Quarry Braes. Then someone wondered if there would be anywhere to plant nearer to St. Andrews. Large oaks from little acorns grow, as they say! SWT approached Fife Council and between us a site was identified by the Kinness Burn in St. Andrews.
We had a great turnout of Church members on a beautiful day in April. I’m afraid there had been a bit of subterfuge on both SWT and Church sides! The Church thought they were planting 12 trees, in fact we produced 18 for them to plant. Worse, many of the members thought they were just there for the photos. They must have been horrified when I produced spades and started a quick talk on how to plant trees!
However, everyone rose to the occasion, the trees were planted in record time and we had a great afternoon.
We are shortly to be putting up a sign and will be adding to the number of trees with each successive World Day of Prayer.
